Dear Friends,
The New Year started
off with trips to the east coast where I took the opportunity
to visit smaller book stores in NYC and Connecticut. I like
to visit these stores wherever I travel. Independent
booksellers work hard for new authors and are always happy to
receive signed copies for their shelves. Whenever I
visit these quaint shops, I'm reminded of the movie,
You've Got Mail, starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. Smaller
book dealers
often fight to stay alive when competing against larger book stores,
much like Ryan did in the
movie. Unfortunately, Ryan's shop went under, going up against
a giant chain managed by Hanks. It's always sad to see a
store go out of business. To find an

I took my youngest
son along on one of my trips to New York City just before the holidays.
We visited favorite sites
and walked everywhere, blending in with the New Yorkers. I was
particularly touched when we stood on a platform area at Ground Zero,
watching the reconstruction process. Behind us, people rushed down
a flight of stairs to the subway. My son watched the crowd. "They're so brave,"
he said, "they had friends who died right here, yet they go on,
hurrying to catch the subway home..." We were
quiet then, taking in the sounds of the city, both humbled and
amazed by the determination of the people, by the ongoing
restoration project and by the hopeful spirit of an entire city.
